The new Munyonyo Martyrs shrine has, by estimation, the tallest cross in Africa. According to Architect Robert Sseremba, the cross is 30feet tall an intentional design to give the shrine the elegance and significance it deserves. Sseremba of skyline consul tants limited was the project architect and manger for the Munyonyo Martyrs shrine. He was also responsible for overseeing the quality requirments, ensuring that the contractors met the preseribed standards.
“It was an honour to have parconstruct a structure of such historical monumental significance,” he said
Sseremba added that Munyonyo has for long been a hidden historical religious site that shelters a lot of heritage that he sought to bring the world through an elegant structure.
The new Munyonyo Martyrs shrine derives her design from the traditional African structure- the hut. The architecture is ancient, yet modern, strong and astonishingly breathtaking. “It was my first time to work on a project like this, and I thank God for the opportunity for me to get involved. It was a blessing,” Sseremba added. Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine is, unlike Namugongo, an interaction between the interior and the between the interior and the exterior. Thanks to her concrete, glass and timber set up, the church allows the outside congregation to interact with the Alter without necessarily being inside the church premises. “We made it in way that if the church fills up, the congregation on the outside doesn’t have to peep to follow the proceedings of the Holy Mass. They continue to interact with the Alter as comfortably as the ones on the inside,” he further noted.
The shrine also marries artificial and natural lighting creating undeniably the best illumination of any structure in uganda. And that is just phase one. According to Sseremba, the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine will also have a pavilion, meditation grounds and other support structures that will bring out the heritage, importance and significance as a historical, religious and tourism site in Uganda.
After a vigorous bidding proces, seyani International won the tender to undertake the physical construction of the shrine and formation house for the offices, amoung other bidders.
