As our parish prepares to celebrate its 10th Anniversary, we give thanks to God for the many ministries and devotions that have grown and flourished within our community. Over the years, we have used this bulletin to introduce these ministries and encourage every parishioner to participate in at least one.

Among the most important ministries at Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine today is the Ushers Ministry. Serving as an usher is one of the most rewarding ways a member of our parish community can offer their time and talents in service to God and His people.

Ushers play a vital role in ensuring that our liturgical celebrations are conducted in an orderly, welcoming, and prayerful atmosphere. They assist with seating arrangements, help maintain decorum during Mass, and guide parishioners in observing appropriate conduct.

Whether it is reminding worshippers to silence their phones, helping children remain attentive during Mass, or ensuring that everyone is comfortably seated, ushers contribute greatly to a meaningful worship experience.

As our parish continues to grow, so does the number of faithful attending Mass. Consequently, there is an increasing need for more ushers to serve at our six Sunday Masses at Munyonyo.

Who is an Usher?

An usher, also known as a Minister of Hospitality, is a lay liturgical minister who welcomes parishioners and visitors, assists with seating, manages the offertory collection, and helps maintain a reverent atmosphere before, during, and after Mass. In our parish, the Ushers Ministry falls under the Liturgy Ministry, led by Mr Robert Kakooza.

Ushers are often described as the face of the parish. Their responsibilities include:

Welcoming parishioners and visitors at the church entrance.
Assisting the faithful in finding available seats.
Safely collecting financial offerings and gifts during Mass.
Helping maintain an orderly flow of the faithful during Holy Communion.
Distributing church bulletins and other materials.
Assisting during emergencies and helping maintain a quiet, prayerful environment.

The ministry of ushering has deep roots in the history of the Church. Its origins can be traced back to the early Christian community, where designated servants assisted in maintaining order during worship.

Historically, these duties were associated with the ordained ministry of the porter (ostiary), whose role included guarding church entrances. In 1972, Pope Paul VI entrusted these responsibilities more fully to the laity, paving the way for the ministry of ushers as we know it today.

Who Can Join?

At Munyonyo Basilica, anyone aged 15 years and abovewho demonstrates good character, integrity, and a willingness to serve is welcome to join the Ushers Ministry. Members are expected to arrive at least 15–20 minutes before Mass to prepare for their duties.

Those who join will receive the necessary training to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to serve effectively.

We particularly encourage our youth to consider joining this ministry as an opportunity to serve the Lord and become more actively involved in parish life.
