As the world celebrates International Women’s Day today, Uganda Martyrs
Parish Munyonyo has marked the occasion by giving back to the less fortunate
in the community.
According to Ms Dorothy Lubega, the head of the Catholic Women’s Guild at
Munyonyo, the women aim to donate 1,000 packets of sanitary towels to the
Good Samaritan Ministry for distribution to women and girls, particularly those
still in school, without religious discrimination.
Research indicates that only about 22% of Ugandan girls have access to
sanitary towels, a situation that causes up to five million girls to miss school
each year due to period poverty.
This year’s Women’s Day celebrations are being held under the theme “Give to
Gain.” High costs and inadequate sanitation facilities force many girls to resort
to unhygienic alternatives such as old clothes, paper, or leaves, which
contribute to school dropout and increase the risk of infections.
Every year, the Catholic Women’s Guild of Munyonyo collects and donates
these essential items not only to mark Women’s Day but also as part of their
almsgiving during the Lent season.
After the 9:00 a.m. Mass today, the women will gather at the Grotto of Our
Lady of Sorrows for the official handover.
Ms Lubega said the women will animate the 9:00 a.m. Mass, take a group
photo outside the church, and then proceed to the grotto for refreshments,
cake cutting, a brief address by the parish priest, and the formal handover of
their almsgiving to the Good Samaritan Ministry. The day will conclude with
fellowship and celebration.
Parishioners are encouraged to support this noble cause.
We wish all the women in our parish a joyful and blessed International
Women’s Day.
