Munyonyo Legionaries Gather for Year-End Reunion as Parish Celebrates the Immaculate Conception

The Legionaries of Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Munyonyo Minor Basilica, hosted the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Curia Kansanga for their end-of-year reunion on Saturday, 6th December 2025.

The gathering, held at the Our Lady of Sorrows Grotto on Saturday, 6th December 2025, featured a series of activities, including Mass, talks, games, and shared fellowship.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr Anthony Rucukye under the theme “Do Not Be Afraid.” His presentation aimed to help legionaries identify fears that hinder their apostolic work, recognise how Mary guides them through such fears, and build the confidence needed to fulfil the Legion’s mission.

Drawing from Scripture, he cited passages such as Deuteronomy 31:8, where Moses encourages Joshua with the assurance that the Lord will never abandon him. He also referenced Isaiah 43:1, Matthew 14:27, Luke 1:30, Luke 2:10, and Matthew 28:5, all echoing God’s message of courage, rooted in the Resurrection and His ever-present protection.

Mr Rucukye reminded legionaries that God’s grace is sufficient for all, and that His power is made perfect in weakness, stressing that fear remains the greatest obstacle to apostolic service. He highlighted common fears that distance people from Christ, such as the fear of inadequacy, failure, the past, the future, and the fear of surrender.

He encouraged legionaries to trust deeply in Mary’s leadership, noting that the Legion Handbook teaches that a Legionary acts not by personal strength, but as a soldier under the command of Mary, Queen of Apostles.

“Her presence gives courage in difficult situations, peace in moments of spiritual challenge, and assurance during door-to-door or street apostolate. A Legionary is never alone; Mary goes before them into every encounter. This is the heart of the Gospel message: Do not be afraid, for I am with you,” he said.

The reunion was attended by legionaries from Munyonyo, including their Patron, Rev. Fr. Ronnie Kibagajo, along with other guests.

Celebrating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

On Monday, 8th December 2025, Munyonyo parishioners joined Catholics across the world in celebrating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The 6:00 pm Mass was led by Fr. Denis Kizito Ssebunya from neighbouring Ggaba Parish.

In his homily, Fr. Kizito recalled that in 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

“It had existed, but it was not yet a dogma. As Father Male has explained before, the Friars are custodians of this devotion. They have done much for the Church, and their theological contribution helped the Holy Father. Sometimes people do not understand why they are so closely connected to Mother Mary,” he noted.

He urged the faithful to speak to Mother Mary often, sharing with her their weaknesses and struggles, assuring them that she listens and intercedes powerfully. He cautioned believers not to be swayed by those who doubt Mary’s presence or intercession, but rather to remain focused on her maternal guidance.

During the Mass, all parishioners received a free Mary Immaculate Miraculous Medal.

Mary conceived without original sin, pray for us who have recourse to you. Amen.
