Parents have been urged to bring their teenage sons and daughters to join the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine Teens’ Ministry, which provides a vibrant space where young Catholics aged 12 to 17, along with slightly older youth, can deepen their faith while forging friendships through engaging activities.
According to Ellen Agaba, one of the ministry’s coordinators, the group was formed to keep teenagers involved in the Church, help them learn about their faith at their own pace, and encourage them to grow together in a supportive community.
“Many youth drift away from the Catholic Church as they grow older. We want to help them see why it is beautiful to remain, while offering opportunities to learn, play, and support each other,” she explained.
Since its beginning, the Ministry has organised at least five sessions, each designed to blend fun with faith. Every gathering features games to foster bonding among the young people, followed by themed activities such as:
The team leaders are also considering having the Teens perform a Christmas play, subject to available funds and time.
“We try to do something different every time so that different groups of young people are attracted. It’s not just teaching all the time; there’s also fun, but always linked to faith,” Ellen added.
The ministry is overseen by a team of about 10 volunteers, who assist in organising and leading sessions. While most volunteers come from backgrounds in teaching, social work, or seminary, she encourages anyone with a heart for guiding teenagers, be they youth, men, or women, to support the ministry.
Participation is open to all interested teenagers, and parents are encouraged to bring them to meet their peers during the activities, which typically take place on the SECOND SUNDAY of each month, starting after 9 a.m. Mass and concluding by 1:00 p.m.
Ellen mentioned that this schedule helps parents plan easily and encourages families to stay engaged with the parish.
She noted that there is no registration process, and anyone is welcome to join. Parents are also encouraged to allow their teens to take part in readings and petitions at Mass during the Sunday of their meeting.
Beyond imparting Catholic teachings, the Teens’ Ministry aims to strengthen friendships among young parishioners. “The children look forward to coming because they know their friends will be there. It gives them joy, and at the same time, it keeps them close to the Church with their families,” she added.
The ministry is a bridge between Sunday school and Youth Ministries.
