Members of St. Gyaviira Mobile Kabondo (Small Christian Community) have begun the year
2026 on a strong and hopeful note, committing to animate one Sunday Mass every quarter.
Guided by their leaders, the members animated the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, 18 January
2026, at Munyonyo Basilica. They participated in the readings, petitions, offertory, and
other liturgical ministries.
In his homily, Fr. Mpiima reflected deeply on the words of John the Baptist in the Gospel:
“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” He explained the
importance of understanding Scripture within its proper context and encouraged the
congregation to join the Bible-sharing group as a way of growing in faith and knowledge of
the Word.
Father explained the meaning of the “Lamb of God” by drawing from Jewish culture, where
the lamb played a central role in sacrifice and redemption. This background, he noted, helps
the faithful better understand who Christ is for them today, Jesus as the true sacrificial Lamb
who offers Himself for the salvation of the world.
Fr. Mpiima further reflected on the words proclaimed during Mass: “Blessed are those called
to the supper of the Lamb.” He reminded the faithful that all are invited to this supper to
receive Christ Himself. “Even as sinners, we are welcomed by Jesus, who desires to heal and
restore us.”
He explained that through the Mass, venial sins are forgiven and the faithful are
strengthened by God’s grace. However, he reminded the congregation that those conscious
of mortal sin should first seek reconciliation through the Sacrament of Confession before
receiving Holy Communion.
After Mass, members of the Mobile Kabondo community held their first meeting of 2026,
marking an important step in strengthening their unity. Members introduced themselves in
order to know one another better and to ease recognition outside the church in their day-
to-day lives. The Kabondo brings together faithful from different parts of Kampala, living
outside the jurisdiction of Munyonyo Parish.
Key discussions focused on planning activities for 2026. The Shrine’s Pilgrims’ Guide and
Kabondo Nabavubuka, Ms Ntongo, shared insights on the Year of St. Francis, encouraging
members to participate in its celebrations and related spiritual activities.
A major resolution of the meeting was the formation of smaller groups based on areas of
residence. These groups will help members pray together, especially through the Holy
Rosary in homes, support one another during sickness, challenges, and celebrations, and
foster a stronger sense of Christian community. Plans were also discussed for communal
Rosaries at the Grotto.
The meeting also included a presentation on the financial status of the Kabondo and the
policies guiding the handling of community funds. The group’s Ssabakristu handed over an
envelope containing Shs 500,000 in support of parish projects.
At 3:00 p.m., a smaller group representing St. Gyaviira, the Youth, and Our Lady of
Guadalupe gathered to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Holy Rosary together with
Radio Maria, bringing the day to a prayerful close.
The Kabondo also announced dates for their next Mass animations: 19 April, 19 July, and 18
October 2026. All members are encouraged to take part in these activities for the growth of
their Kabondo community and the parish at large.
