The Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Jessica Alupo, has committed to supporting Church activities at Munyonyo and regularly joining the faithful for Mass.
H.E. Alupo, who is a neighbour of Munyonyo Parish, made the remarks during the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, 3 May 2026, in the Basilica.
She applauded the Catholic Church for its contribution to society through its programs on health, education and poverty eradication, noting that the Church and government are strong partners, and that the latter will continue working with all religious institutions, for the good and welfare of the people of Uganda.
The Vice President also shared that she had last prayed at Munyonyo four years ago and was impressed by the area’s development.
“I thank you for keeping this Basilica shining. You will be seeing me regularly in this church now because my home is very near, and whenever I am around, I will be coming to worship with you,” she said.
Divine Mercy Retreat
Meanwhile, members of the Divine Mercy Devotion have been called to live exemplary lives that reflect their faith, even without words.
The call was made by Fr Edward Kabanda while presiding over the Monthly Divine Mercy Retreat held on Saturday, 2 May 2026, at Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine.
According to Fr Kabanda, some of the most powerful lessons are communicated through one’s way of life.
“Sometimes we don’t have time to explain or speak to people, but by the way you live, you show the truth. Remember in the Acts of the Apostles, when they reached Antioch, their way of life showed they were Christians. Some people learn just by observing,” he said.
He further urged the faithful to embrace the Rosary, especially during May, which is dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Church. He prayed for humility among the faithful and encouraged them to draw grace from the sacraments, particularly Reconciliation and Holy Communion.
Fr Kabanda explained that many Christians no longer receive the Body and Blood of Christ, partly because the Church no longer consistently recites the Rosary before Mass. He noted that this has weakened devotion to seeking the intercession of Mother Mary in leading God’s children to His table. He called for a deeper connection to Mother Mary.
The retreat, which was held under the theme: “Mary Mother of Mercy and Our Mother, attracted hundreds of participants and included activities such as the Rosary, praise and worship, confessions, a Q&A session, and Holy Mass, among others.
Month of Mother Mary
As we continue with the month of Mother Mary, the mother of the church, the faithful at Munyonyo are urged to participate in activities honouring her.
In the Catholic Church, May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in recognition of her role as the Mother of God and Mother of the Church.
Here at Munyonyo, every evening at 5:00 p.m., the Holy Rosary is recited at the Grotto. Additionally, another group led by Fr Peter prays the Rosary online at 9:00 p.m. The faithful are encouraged to participate by joining either group or praying the Rosary within their respective Bubondo.
